Google Voice is texting?

OK, I tried to install Google Voice but it apparently isn't active on my phone. I asked for an invite on the google site. However I looked today and found that there were 3 text messages sent to what I found out to be a Google number. I don't use text services on my line. What's up with this? Is it when it was trying to verify my number? Also doesn't Android keep track of messages sent?

I'm not the resident Google Voice expert, but as I understand it, you have to have a Google Voice number in order to receive texts through their service. If you establish a Google Voice account without the number, texts aren't an option. I dunno. I set up the service without the number, and was unimpressed, as some voicemails were lost in limbo, and they weren't transcribed like I had hoped. Haven't messed with it in some time.
