GTalk And Adding new Users

I have a stupid Gtalk question. I noticed that several people in the forums just give a username for Gtalk not a email address. How do I add just a username to gtalk, I cant add someone without having a whole email address? Also I can't see anywhere I can have a alias or anything other than my email address for a user name.

as far as I know it is email address only - you could possibly add @gmail.com to the end of the username in question -

Thats kinda what I was thinking just wasnt sure if I was missing something.
