Hacking, rooting, and roming? Why do it?

Recently upgraded from bb storm and I am just curious as to what hacks, roots, and roms do to your phone and for your phone? Any help for a newbie would be great because it all sounds pretty cool.

Gives you more control over your device, allows you to overclock and load the latest version of android before the mfr gets around to it (Like I've got 2.3 on my D1).
