Help me pick a phone for Thailand

Hey all,

So I'm going on an extended trip to Thailand this summer (4+ months) and I need a phone.

I love my DX to death but no way I can pay verizon int'l charges for that long, and no 3G anyway.

I have read that you can buy SIM cards for one of the larger Thai cell providers One-2-Call and get pretty decent coverage and even an unlimited data plan:

So I'm looking for an Android powered phone to by cheap/used here in the States to take before I go that will work with local SIMs on EDGE/GPRS.

I have no problem rooting/flashing/etc.

I was hoping I might be able to pick a used Galaxy S for this, but I'm open to suggestions, I don't really know what will work and what won't.

Thanks for your help, I really really don't want to have to get a 3GS for this.

Not 100% on this but wouldn't the Droid 2 Global work?? I have never used a global phone so not sure how it goes when you skip across to other countries.. anyone else?? Also if you hold long enough there is a slight.. and I mean slight chance that the HTC Merge might pop up with global phone and the Inc2 might be coming stateside with global setup.. Right now though I think D2 global would be best bet..

Another thing. I know that the galaxy S for Verizon would not work as there is no sim card.. in fact D2 global I think is only Android with Verizon with sim card.. for now..

Hey wc,

Thanks for the advice.

I haven't looked at the D2 but it is an option.

I'm not too worried about buying verizons, or anyone else's global service though. I just plan on buying local SIM card for making calls and getting internet in country. I can use Skype for calling home.

Point taken on the Verizon Galaxy S - I was referring to the ATT one.

Thanks again

No problem.. yeah I only know Verizon phones so however you may go I wish you the best and have a safe trip..
