Look into ROMs. They have great battery life improvements, and help with speed too.

Currently stock Gingerbread firmware provides better battery life compared to all 2.3-based custom ROMs.

The battery life may seem low in the first 2-3 weeks after the upgrade. After that, battery calibration is done, and the readings become consistent. I easily get 30 hours on stock with everything on (sync, GPS, WiFi), compared to 16 hours on CM7 and 14 to 18 hours on MIUI.

I get better battery life, but my phone is running bare stock programs, no add ons. So I dunno.
