help with notifications

this is my first Droid phone ( droid4) i can not seem to set my notifications correct. first of all when i recieve a text message and the screen is in sleep mode I cant see who it is from, is there a way to change it so the screen lights up when a text comes in?. Thanks

I know there apps out there that will make your screen light up when you receive a text. Can't remember the name of any off the top of my head though. However, when you receive a text, you should see a little notification light at the top left of your phone start blinking.

Handcent has support for turning the screen on when a message comes in I believe. I know it can do it for message reminders. You can also go into the messenger setting and turn on vibrate so you will get a physical notification of an incoming message.
