I've noticed while using Google Maps the battery is well over 112°F. Is this a common thing while using maps? Am I causing damage to the battery?

i would think its not common, as some where between 110 and 120 many devices will shut off due to over heating.
you are certainly shortening immediate battery life, long term, if it gets this hot frequently, the over all life of the battery will be shorter than normal.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm hoping it isn't doing any damage. The highest was 116°F. I'm hoping Mr.Foxkat will offer his opinion too on this?

my bionic, which i made them replace with a new one after one week, would hard reset @ 120 all the time with the hotspot only running.

PAGING DR. FOXKAT!!! :)
