How can I avoid receiving text charges?

OK, this may seem petty, but ...

I bought the Droid for use in a new business venture. I'll use lots of minutes a month, and the unlimited data will be heavily utilized. But I'm not interested in texts. Just not a texter. On my old phone (old job, same business), I would receive maybe 5 texts a year and send none.

So within a few days of getting the business set up, I started receiving text messages that are trying to market services to my new company.

$0.20 each isn't such a big deal, but it's very annoying. How can I put a stop to this?

Which plan do you have? I'm on the Select plan, which has no limits on texts, mms, etc.

Basically you could call VZ to block.

I may be mistaken but I thought you have unlimited texts/messaging with the unlimiteded data plan.

This is my understanding as well, but I got a text from Verizon urging me to change my plan to stop being charged .20 per text. I think their marketing department just was behind as I had only owned the Droid for a few days.

ETA: OK, I just looked it up online and I do indeed have unlimited text and data. I am on a Select plan with unlimited minutes.

Only data is included in the unlimited plan, not messaging. You need to figure out how much the cheapest messaging plan is and figure out if it is worth. If you can get a plan for like $5/month, it might be worth it since that would be the cost of 25 messages (sent and received)

edit: just looked on the verizon site and it does say unlimited text but my parents set it up so I'm not sure if its included or not

Call VZW and just have them block text messages. :)

@firedroid text messaging is not included in the unlimited data plans. That is just data (MB) and email usage. The VZW select plan and higher is the only unlimited text plans available now.

Thanks for clearing that up, I have the family select plan with data plan so I guess thats why I assumed it was included in the data plan.

That is why I asked what plan the OP is on. My wife has a LG Chocolate Touch and I the Droid. We have the "Select" plan, which includes unlimited text, MMS, etc. And thru my Data and web: unlimited data.

So I'm not worried about texts at all.

I have received some unsolicited texts, though a lot were people looking for the previous numbers owner, would have thought VZ would go 90 days or so before reassigning, etc. No big deal, just texted them back that "Joy" is no longer reached at this ###.

If you don't have a MyVerizonWireless.com account, go ahead and set one up. You can check in at any time and see your plan details, usage details, back up contacts, etc. And it's free.

Can also download the whole shebang to a spreadsheet so you can really study your usage and whether a different plan would be better for you.

OP here -

My plan is a Basic voice plan with unlimited minutes. Plus the Unlimited Data required by the Droid. Texts cost 20 cents each. It would take 25 texts a month to justify a $5 text plan or 100 texts to justify a Select plan (with unlimited texts).

As previously mentioned, I don't use text.

Doesn't stop people from texting me, however. So, does anybody know how to cut this off?
