How can I install apps without Google Play store?

I have a Google Nexus player. I know, its old, but some apps still work so it's set up in a spare bedroom for now. I am trying to install some other possible apps but the Google Play store does not work at all. It crashes and reboots the unit EVERY time. I thought about using an alternative App Store app (Aptoide, apkmirror, etc), but I can't get anything else installed to it.

I don't want to reset the whole unit in fear of the google play store still not working and then unable to use ANY apps. Is there any other way to install apps to this Nexus player without factory reseting the unit? if so, how?

Any suggestions?
