How do i delete/disable default texting

Someone suggested I try handcent and I guess its okay but now I have two text message apps, how do I disable or delete the one that was on the phone when I got it?

I went to settings, applications, manage applications and when I open the text messaging app the uninstall is grayed out. When I selected Force Stop, it doesn't do anything. The only other option is Clear Data, do I need to do this before it will allow me to uninstall? It looks like all my messages were copied to handcent but I want to make sure I'm not going to lose them if I select clear data. Thanks!!

If you try to text you should get the choice of using either with a button to "Use as default".
So you click it and then choose your preferred text app.

On the page you had visited you should also have seen "Defaults" which allows you to clear previously set defaults.

You dont want to remove it because I remember reading that Handcent just piggybacks off of the stock app so if you delete messaging.apk you will no longer get texts. I don't know if it's entirely true though. What you'll want to do is go into the stock app's settings and uncheck the notifications box so you wont get double notifications each time.
