How do you download images from the driod to a computer??

I tried using the USB connection, but the computer doesn't recognize the droid as a storage device.

Two ways are easiest...USB the phone to the computer & drag/stop the photos, or I use Dropbox to automatically upload the pictures to Dropbox and it'll show up on your computer.

You need to install the Moto drivers in order for your computer to recognize the phone and enable file transfers. They're available on Motorola's website and any additional drivers for other modes should install themselves after you have loaded those from Moto and connected the phone.
