How do you update roaming?

Don't do the 228 thing anymore, you are lucky your sim didn't fry! I'm pretty sure there is no longer a need to update roaming.

Yeah, this has been true since the 'Bolt - http://www.droidforums.net/forum/htc-thunderbolt/133586-228-doesnt-work.html - I don't know about frying behavior, but there's just no need.
