6 months old and my phone (moto-droid) can run 2.2 android, the latest version. That speaks volumes to me about this phone considering how many android phones out there have not gotten an upgrade to the OS in a while and may never get an update. The 3rd official moto-droid android release is due out shortly.
It sits in the dock and serves as my alarm clock, getting me up each morning. (stock app)

My work has alerts that come to my phone via text messages. I check the status of various servers from my phone and am notified when something isn't right. (handcent)
I used an app to step outside, glance skyward, and within 2 minutes there went the International Space Station with the shuttle Atlantis docked to it...3-4 minutes I watched as it crawled across the sky. (iridium flare forecast)

Whenever I'm stuck in a waiting room, at motor vehicle, or waiting to pick someone up in the car (and parked) I will read books on the phone. (Aldiko)
I had to do some work at home, and the power was out. My phone let me wirelesly tether my laptop and 45 minutes later I was done with a laptop battery at 50% charged and a phone at 80% charged. (wifi tether for root users)
I've used it as a remote to control VLC, a video player program on my PC. (vlc remote)
It tracked my progress, via bike, around a reservoir, telling me I traveled 3.6 miles in 36 minutes, that I paused for 10 minutes, my max speed was 24 mph. It also gave my highest/lowest elevation and avg speed then transferred the entire output to Google's mymaps and Googledocs spreadsheet. (my tracks)
