How to build roms?

I've always had a thing with computers and Modding video game systems, but now that I spend so much time on my x2 I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to grasping the concept of how to build a rom, it just seems like so much fun, I see all the love devs get on a daily basis, and I want to help out the Droid community. I just don't know where to start.

Look up android open source project...to build a rom you need to have a very good knowledge of Linux since android is very Linux based
