How to extend the refresh rate of apps?

It seems that applications like pulse news and facebook are consuming battery life by constantly checking for updates in the background. I dont want to remove either of these apps, so how can i instead extend the refresh time in the background for these apps? Thanks.

Go into Settings on FB (on RAZR) and set the refresh interval to whatever designation you'd like. As far as pulse news I'm not familiar with that app but if you dig around in settings/preferences you may find something.

Oh i see. I thought the settings were located within the android settings themselves.
