How to get most out of my s3

My partner has a galaxy s3 and is keen to upgrade to get most out it, he has heard about changing root and rom. But we have no idea what to do, where to start.
Any advise on the best available would be ace!
Running Andoid 4.0 or something haha HELP!!

First you have to ask yourself, what advantages are you looking for in rooting your device. It does void your warranty.
