How to make android apps

Can anyone suggest a good book or give me some good direction in app development?

Have you played with Tasker? You can make apps with it now if you download the Tasker App Factory. I've never played with the App Factory so I don't know much about how it works. I believe you can put your apps in the market. Tasker isn't free but the Factory is.
