A newly discovered malware is already running on more than 10 million Android handsets world wide. The malware is linked to a Chinese firm, Yingmob. The company is known to run a legitimate ad business and has used the malware to generate false ad clicks raking in about $300,000 per month. Their malware targets heavily users in China and India who make up nearly 3 million of affected devices. There are about 288,000 devices affected in the US. The malware can root your device, gain control, and install their apps. Fortunately the malware doesn't seem to be used for anything other than generating false clicks.
Users of older versions of Android including Kit Kat and Jelly Bean are most at risk with only 1% of affected devices are running Marshmallow. Yingmob is also responsible for Yispecter, iOS malware which was blocked by Apple with an update. Hopefully Google will get this piece of malware blocked quickly in the coming security patches. Unfortunately many of the devices running older versions of Android like Jelly Bean and KitKat may have already been end of lifed.
