I saw it on Android Central yesterday and decided to suck it up and pay the $2. It's Android Quick App Widgetlocker Lockscreen and it's my new best friend.
I can do most of my typical phone functions right from the lock screen now. I chose to go back to the original 2.0 rotating lock (remember those, Droid 1 users?). I added shortcuts for the dialer, Handcent, Gmail, Dolphin Browser, Weather Bug, the camera, and Kindle. I also added the quick toggle widget I have so I can turn Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ringer without having to actually unlock my phone.
It does run in the background all the time, but I haven't noticed any battery drain. In fact, I just checked my Battery Usage and it's not even listed as using 2% or more.
Seriously in love!
