If you can't save anything to the SD care...

Why have one.

What gets saved to to the SD card now?

My SD card has nothing, overall, on it.

I know I can use file managers or even windows explorer to move file.

But, why?

Anything but apps. I have plenty of room on mine and I have like 900 pictures and 50 videos. No music though.

Just as bigbadwulff says..Anything but apps. My SD card (32GB. The maximum allowed in the RAZR M) set as the default save location for pictures and videos. But not only that, if you receive pictures and/or attachments to your email address(es) on your phone, which takes away from your internal memory, just move them to your SD card to keep your internal memory free. Same goes for SMS or text messages with pictures, etc.

Another reason for putting stuff on ext sd is if your screen breaks or phone dies etc. you don't lose all your pics etc. cause you can just pull the card.
