I'm visually impaired. Thinking about getting this, but not sure yet.

I went to my local Verizon store since my contract is about to be over, and I'm wanting a new phone. I asked them about phones that may be better for me and my visual impairment. But they were of no help. Texting is a big issue for me. They couldn't show me what incoming texts look like on any of the phones. So, I have a couple questions.

Can you enlarge incoming texts? If so, can you also change the background and text color (i.e. black background with white text)? My current phone has no options to change the text. I use a magnifier right now, but I still struggle a lot while using that. I'm sure it has a text to speech option, but I'm not interested in that. I don't like people around me listening in, and I also wouldn't be able to use that if I'm in a quiet, public place (library, office buildings, etc). So, this is a big issue for me.

Also, about icons, internet, etc, are there ways to enlarge those? I believe I read somewhere that there's a browser where you can enlarge the fonts on the web. But, I'm also concerned about icon size on the main screen. I have never seen a droid in real life, so I don't know how it is. My local store didn't have any for some weird reason.

I'm just concerned about texting and navigating the phone IF I get it. These are deciding factors. If these don't come standard on the phone, does anybody know if there's any apps for these purposes?

Thanks in advance.

Yes you actually can enlarge text with a texting app called Handcent. As well as change colors of text and background and enlarge font pretty big...and I am pretty sure your right about the internet app also

Thank you very much for the quick reply. That helps a lot. How about the main screen and everything? Are the icons small? Can those be enlarged (standard or magnifying app, etc)? And how about the programs on the phone? I'm assuming texts in programs can't be enlarged? How are the icons compared to the iphone icons (my friend has an iPhone). I would just want to be able to use the phone easily to it's full potential.

Thanks again.

Well, I would have to say unfortunately that the icons on the home screen are a bit smaller than the iphones icons. Im not really sure if there is a way to acquire larger ones or not, I really dont know. But one thing it has that most other smartphones including the iphone dont have, is a very vivid HD screen...if that might help you any...

howdy blazn :D there is an app called sweeterhome preview 2 (not available in the market yet) that you can resize anything on any of yur screens to be as big as you want. the trouble is...if you cant see to create yur homescreen you would have to have someone do it for you. i'd volunteer to create you one to get you started and tweak it as necessary for you. :D

That's a pretty nice offer.

Word.

Well see, there you go blazn, I didn't know that could do that. Ive had this phone for about going 3 months now and Im still learning new things its capable of almost every day! It truly is a remarkable and powerful device, by far, one of a kind

=o i forgot about that app!! thanks backnblack you saved me alot of work lol

The speech output to confirm what you have requested of the phone is non-existent. On even the simplest phone you can say, "call bob jones, mobile" and the phone will repeat, "Call sally jones?" (well mine always said the wrong name first). My point is that the Droid does not do that, it asks you to confirm your command on-screen, and I am pretty sure you cannot manipulate that text. If you can use an iphone, than you can use this, but if your vision is limited more than that, I would steer clear for now.

Wow, thanks everyone!

Corinacakes - If I get this phone, I'll let you know. I'm sure I'll be lost at first. I've never owned a phone like this. I really appreciate it.

BlacknBlack - Does that work for the Droid, or is it just for the Android (by HTC I believe)?

Thanks again everybody for your replies.

Should work on all Android phones, Droid included.

Yes, the Motorola Droid is an Android phone, so it should work on it with no problems! Good luck, and happy phone hunting!

Thanks everyone. I just got my Droid today! I don't think the Bigger Icons Widge works though, unless I'm not doing it right. When I click on on, it says go to the homescreen>menu>widgets>bigger icons widget...or something like that. I can't menu (I tried settings), but I can't find "widgets" anywhere.

ok try long pressing an empty space on your home screed and select Widgets when the pop up window appears
