Internal Memort

I have Thomas widget on y home screen that provides me info a about my internal memory. It keeps creeping higher and higher, I'm now at 84mb out of 261mb. What exactly is stored on the internal memory and how can I free up some space? Do I need to free up some space or is this a great deal of memory left?
