International calling with Verizon

I will be out of the country and want to use my Verizon Droid without roaming charges. I'll be in both GSM and CDMA countries. I have reviewed (and am confused by) fring, Skype Mobile, SIP, etc. I understand that I can use wifi when in airplane mode but Skype Mobile requires a Verizon signal/roaming. I want to call cell phones in the US. What do I do?

I'll be headin to afghanistan in a few weeks, so I'll see how it works there. I was hopin to use one of the wifi hotspots on base and hopefully use skype that way to call my family or whoever, but I didn't know you needed a verizon signal...damn...really puts a stop on that...

I'm bound to find some way to call my family using MY phone there...
