Is it the phone or the carrier?

I live in Austin, tx. I just ordered myself a Droid X and in the meantime Verizon gave me a Droid Eris to use until I get my X, but the cell reception for this thing is terrible and I keep getting static filled calls and dropped calls. So my question is, is it just this phone they gave me or is it the coverage. Anybody living in Austin, how's your coverage with Verizon?

I don't live in Austin but I went there once a month for 5 years. I never had any issues while there traveling all over the ciry
