Is there a good traffic/navigation app?

My husband and I just joined the "Droid" world - Keep in mind it is hard to teach an "old" dog new tricks! We use to have VZ Navigator, which my husband used daily because it had a "traffic" section that not only told you there was traffic but told you what was causing it and how long before it cleared up. He is now very frustrated with google maps because it does not do this?? or does it? Is there an app that will take care of this for him??

Another (probably stupid) question - what is rooting and why??

Thank you for whatever help I can get.

hmm, I know Google maps/navigation has a traffic overlay that will show you good or bad traffic (green, yellow, red, black lanes, etc) but i'm not too sure if it shows or tells you why traffic is backed up. But the best thing about google maps/navigation is that you don't have to pay $10 a month for it! (or have a particular phone plan)

This is rooting.... http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/632-what-root-means-stop-asking.html (i didn't write the title, so i'm not saying "stop asking"! haha. I think the person that wrote it was a little aggravated because a lot of people do ask......I mean, hey, we were all new to it at one time!)

As mentioned above, Google Nav does show traffic issues but I don't think it tells you what the cause is or how long it will take to clear. Another GPS nav app could possible offer these features. You might want to look into CoPilot Live. All I can find is this from their site on traffic:
Live Traffic** CoPilot Live's optional traffic service uses the mobile Internet to check your route in real-time for reported traffic problems and displays them on-screen. You can choose to ignore or avoid the incident manually or automatically

** Live Traffic and Fuel Price information are premium services, purchased through CoPilot Central desktop software. Available in certain regions only.
CoPilot Live Android: ALK Technologies

Please note that I'm not recommending CoPilot Live. I've never used it.
