I have been running android 2.1 on my Motorola Droid sense the OTA update. I tried to root my phone, but it didnt work (im assuming because you need 2.0.1 to root). and now every once in a while my phone seems sluggish . is there a way i can safely re-install 2.1 or something?

I'd try a factory reset --- Menu --> Settings --> Privacy --> Factory Data Reset. The #1 slowdown of my Droid friends are tons of apps they never use. Factory Reset has helped them all.
