Is there a way to undo an update/restore emoticon button?

Really all I want back is my emoticon button while texting. When ICS finally dropped, the useless Enter button was finally replaced by the emoticon button I'd missed so much from my original Droid. Now 2-3 days ago I wake up to an "Your phone has updated" message and it's gone again... any ideas? Thanks!
