Items listed in phone memory don't add up

I have the S3 mini with the latest Adroid OS.

When I look in storage under settings it shows that I have a total 8 GB of space (the phone memory, not the SD card) and 3.75 GB fee, with apps taking up only 269 MB, and "miscellaneous" files taking up 3.68GB.

However, when I look into miscellaneous files, I only see a few files listed that don't add up to anywhere near 3.68GB.

Are the remaining files hidden files? Are they system files? How can I view them.

Also, my phone came with a lot of pre-loaded apps that I have no interest in, but I am not able to delete them to free up space.

How can I get rid of them legally without "hacking"?

Thanks

My guess is that you are, in fact, not able to see the space taken by Android and associated data, The only way to view that would be to root the phone.
