Jellybean Update

I have the S3, but it is only a wifi device. I did have service with VZ, but discontinued the service and went to a wifi device only. I am currently on version 4.1.1. I know that 4.1.2 is out, but every time I try to update it says service is unavailable. I'm guessing that is because I do not have VZ service. But that is strange, because yesterday I got a notification that an update to Accessories ( Verizon ) was available. I downloaded and installed that with no problem, even though it came from VZ. I checked with a rep at a store, and was told I would not get updates unless subscribed to VZ. Is this correct? If so, is there any way to get the updates without activating phone? Thanks for any help.

Not really sure. I figured you are due an update you should get it. I hear the new JB update after 4.1.2 is out and would like to get it for my SIII.
