Kernels with my droid 1

Ok I have been rooted for a long time and have loaded many roms by naming them update.zip and throwing them on my SD CARD and then booting in SPRecovering and installing from there.

Excuse my lack of knowledge here but how do I install a different kernel? This does not over write the rom correct?

Kernels should be in update.zip format, and install through recovery just as you would your ROM. It shouldn't replace anything but whatever kernel you are currently running, keeping everything else the same beyond your kernel. It could possibly add some modules and scripts to get the kernel working properly.
