There was a bit of controversy surrounding images taken with the pre-release LG V30 review units. The meta data in the images indicated that the actual aperture on the main shooter of the device was f/1.69. This caused a bit of heartache when LG announced the V30 had an f/1.6 aperture main shooter. It seemed as though LG was being a bit misleading.
Photos taken with later units were showing the aperture to be f/1.6. So why did the pre-release units say the images were f/1.69? According to LG they were disguising the aperture so the announcement would be a surprise. Here is what LG had to say about the entire situation.
Before unveiling a new product, LG Electronics safeguards confidential and proprietary device information by masking the true values of important product specifications. Some preproduction preview sample devices recently distributed featured non-final software, which maintained masked information with regard to aperture. The LG V30 features an F1.6 aperture camera and glass lens, an industry leading innovation.
There was a definite difference between the images taken with the LG V30 and images taken with devices featuring an f/1.7 aperture camera. The low light performance is obviously better on the V30 in most situations than a device like the Galaxy S8.
