Ever since the render of that Nvidia handset popped up a lot of discussion surrounded the pull out keyboard. I mentioned a while back what a great concept it would be to have a virtual slide out keyboard.

The above images are of a concept from LG. What the slider could be used for is anybody's guess but it does appear that it could very well be a virtual keyboard. Pure speculation of course but for those that favor a keyboard it could prove to be a good concept.

For the second patent please visit Phone Dog.

What do you the readers think? Would a virtual keyboard be desirable or do you think it's just a waste and only adds unnecessary thickness?

Definately an interesting concept. I'd have to take it out for a spin first. Seems to me like it would have a lot of other benefits though, like gaming.

Looks like a slider nintendo DS. Lots of possabilities there.

I still think a slide out keyboard is a good thing, as it offers more screen real estate. A virtual QWERTY slide out would be a good idea, one there's no issues with mechanical key breakage, and 2, the thing can be context sensitive.

However one must also wonder if the second screen in LG's intented design is some sort of e-ink display. That would be cool in a way, as well.

I don't play games on my phone and like an all-touch device. So, I'm wondering what would be any additional benefit of the second screen.

Its funny u posted this...

Me and this guy got into a debate about Android copying Apple. I brought up the LG Prada and the iPhone...

Trying to dig up more info on the LG Prada....I saw LG had either this patent or one very similar back in 2006.

Its funny that first Motorola/Nvidia concept phone looked like this...

Definately has potential for alot of things .. i'd be interested to see what they have in mind for two screens

I'm not saying that a dual screen phone isn't in the making, but this rendering in the OP is a joke. It looks like a 5 year old sketched the image on a napkin. I'm sorry, but any kind of prototype for LG would never ever be of that terrible of quality. At the bare minimum it would be rendered in some sort of imaging/CAD software. If this rumor is based even remotely on this "leaked" image, I call BS.

meh! i can see the potential of having a virtual pull out keyboard that could have all sorts of crazy/wild customizations and features. that would be awesome. still.... for someone like me that likes a physical keyboard, it wouldn't matter. i like (and need) a physical keyboard. i want to be able to feel my keys. i would venture to guess that other people who prefer a physical keyboard also feel this way.

Seems LG is a new contender - now between Moto - LG - and HTC - real competition means Cutting Edge and pushing the envelope...can't wait for this

I think a dual screen phone would be awesome! The possibities could be endless. Myself, I love using the virtual keyboard but 75% of the screen is taken up by the actual keyboard, if you could make the virtual keyboard appear on the slide out piece so Gould actually see the field you're typing into.

Two screens to worry about scratching and breaking rather than one? I'll pass
