New to Android, Droid X, and Verizon and trying to learn the ropes here.

I guess I am looking for some guidance.

Just got DX about 5 days ago. The first thing I noticed that I do not like is all the apps that run in the back ground; example: Skype and gmail. (I cant understand why one would need to use skype on a cell phone)

To uninstall the software I don't need, I would need to root, right? Is it possible to root a Droid X safely? I sure could use a little hand holding thru this process, as I've never done this to any phone before.

search DroidX Root for a free one-click root utility, search easy root for a paid version. The rooting process with both of these apps worked for me.

Well I would use skyp cause it would save on my min. if you go over they charge a arm and a leg. skype allows you to call anyone over data. which saves on min to call out costs 2 dollars a month well worth it

Skype uses Mins, Not Wifi...........

Yea what is it with the apps starting on their own???

Do some reading...It's the way Android Runs...

With respect... Kinda sounds like our government "dont worry, the bail out will fix everything"

Sorry, just because I am told not to worry does not mean it is right. There are no ligitimate reasons some programs need to run in background. I've used MANY cell phones and a few smart phones in the past (iphone was last phone) and non of these phones ever required backup software, skype, gps stuff etc running in back ground.

Call me paranoid if you wish, but I dont need gps running in the background.... why do they?

GPS runs if you have it on. Turn GPS off and it no longer runs.

My phone is rooted but I haven't removed or renamed anything. There is no reason to - there isn't anything "extra" that is starting on my X that is using any resources. Sure, I can see some "extra" things in the list of things that are assigned some memory block(s), but they aren't doing anything but being pre-started. If the OS starts to run low on memory, it kills those things.

Everyone has their own personal perferences, so if Android isn't for you, don't sweat it. Go with the platform that you like.
