Looking for apps

I am a recovering Crackberry head and am new to the droid world but I am loving every minute so far. Does anyone know of an app that when you receive an email or SMS text message, the phone will acutally "wake up" similar to when you receive a phone call? I have a notifier with a distintive ring for those, but would love to actually see the phone screen wake up. Also, is there an app that would actually make the horizontal bar across the top where the notifiers are, that would make that bar larger in order tosee the icons?

Handcent has a setting to wake up the screen when you receive a message, you can also have separate ringtones/vibrate patterns per contact through it.

Not sure that there is a way to increase the size of the notification area. I've hidden it completely through Launcher Pro.
