Losing my mind -- GMail Sync questions (s)

OK, I really ma a pretty smart guy and have been an Android user for many years. I cannot, however, for the life of me find/remeber how to set my GMAIL for MANUAL SYNC. I have a 3rd part mail app that I prefer and have set to PUSH my GMail via exchange settings. I still need to sync Google Calendar and Contacts for my company account and want and I like to have my personnel GMail sync'ed manually via the GMail client. I can find where to select what I want sync'ed (Calendar, GMail, Contacts. etc.), but cannot find where I set it to MANUAL or a specified frequency. There used to be a SNYC section in SETTINGS, but it seems to have vanished. HELLLLP ME!! before I go totally nuts.

BTW -- Stock ROM for now.

go to settings\accounts click on your google account then uncheck the box for gmail

Great!! so this will turn-off auto-sync for the GMail account, but still allow it to be sync'ed manually when clicking on the SYNC button?

Yes it will sync only when you sync it by pressing the button.
