LP & ADW help

I am a two week old newbie and have been noticing these nice home screens. I am running a stock 2.1 DroidX and don't want to root. Now my question is, do I need either LP or ADW to add a theme? If so, after I install LP or ADW, how and where do add themes?

you can download LP themed apks online (check out droid life) but it cannot be themed on the phone..

ADW has theme packs on the market (some free, some paid) that can be applied in ADWs settings

Is there a "how to guide" to theming? This is all new to me and don't understand the lingo or process.

There are tons of threads in here for themes. But most are applied by a zip file in Clockwork or ROM Manager. Most everything you find in here has directions. But first you have to decide what theme you want and make sure it is made for your model phone.

Themes for ADW are in the market and are applied in ADW settings. But those "themes" mostly just change the look of some icons and the action buttons on your desktop.
