Mail not updating

I set up my gmail account with both the gmail app and the HTC Mail widget. The problem I'm having is that neither the HTC Mail Widget or the little Gmail App Icon update themselves to indicate when, if and how many new emails I have received. I've checked the auto sync settings and it seems to all be set up to automatically update itself. Can anyone help here? thanks.

I use email notifier to get notified. It's a free app. Just be warned that having the two emails checking will drain your battery. I stuck with Gmail and stopped using the stock email program. I liked it best.
