Make notification tone different for SMS, mail?

I hate that I have the same tone for notifications, no matter if its an sms, email, calendar thing, etc. Is there a way to make different tones for different types of notifications?

Of course, just go into each applications settings and you can change the notification sound for that application.

Even better, if you use Handcent SMS, you can have different notifications for receiving text messages per sender!

I have handcent so I can change the color of the blinking light. I have tried changing the notification ringtone but it is not very reliable. Sometimes it will most of the time its the same tone for both.

For stock Messaging...
Open Messaging app > Menu button > Settings > Select Ringtone...

For Handcent...
Open Handcent > Menu button > Setting > Notification settings > select ringtone

For G-mail..
Open G-mail > Menu button > Settings > Select ringtone

Did you disable the default messaging notification so that only Handcent's notifications are active?
