Manaully turning off display

It there a way to force the display to go dark and lock??
with the Treo if you push the power button briefly the screen goes dark and can't be turned back on without unlocking it.
If I'm done with a phone call on the Droid I have to wait 30 seconds for the screen to time out. So I can't just put it in my pocket.

Pressing the power button once should shut the screen off and lock the phone...

Ahhh you have an Eris...

First off please enter your phone in your user profile so no one gets confused and assumes you have a DROID.

Second the answer to your question is to press the End key once (don't hold it down) to shut off the display and lock the phone.
