How do I set my droid to show if if I missed a text or email? If I receive a text and do not hear the notification, I would like it to show up on the main screen. Now if I am away from from phone for a minute, I need to go in and check for text or email that I might have missed. Thank you for the help

Look for text answering machine, but also, you should get an email icon and/or a tet message icon in your status bar anyways when you have it set up to receive notifications. Open your email and messaging, then settings, make sure you have notifications checked.

Depends on the messenging service you use. Handcent has a widget that will show you the count of unread messages. You can also use missed call for sms. In the settings you can choose to be reminded if you missed a message. There is an app for gmail to show the count also. I just use different color LED lights for gmail and text messages so I can just look at the phone and tell from the blinking LED what I missed.

Definitely make use of the notification bar. You should have a notification there unless you've disabled it in the app or something.
