Will the HTC Droid be customizable with mp3, wav etc sounds for text messages and email? I did that on my Blackberry. Does it even play a sound when you recieve a text or mail?

Yup.

To customize by specific sender, you'll want to try an app like Handcent or Chomp SMS.
