messaging force close

Ok I've had my Motorola Droid since Christmas and I just now am experiencing some of the problems I have read about. I just got a force close on my messages. I had to remove the battery to get the phone to reload. I lost all my saved texts...is there a way to get them back or are they gone forever??

Oh yeah I am using the standard messaging that came on the phone

Using Firmware 2.0.1 ESD56

you can back up data and apps with titanium back up from the market. I mainly use it when I flash other roms. But it saved my data.

correction I do not remember if it saved me text messages because I did not look, but I know it save my contacts and my custom set up that i had for handcent

Well my phone isn't "rooted" not even sure what that means. I guess I was just hoping that my messages weren't lost in never never land I had some i really needed saved in there.

Why does it force close? Is there something I done to cause this or something I can do to prevent this from happening again?
