Motorla Droid A855 charging issue

Hows it going my name is Cody, I have the original droid (Motorola Droid A855) and yesterday my charging port broke, yay! I called many phone repair places and they said you can not fix it since the charging port is connected to the motherboard. Right now I'm trying to jew rig it and charge it via USB cable, cut off one end and attached red (positive) to black (negative) cables to the correct sides of the battery and put my battery in my phone. After that I plugged in the USB and there it is, phone turns on. Only problem is I don't think it is charging, it automatically starts at 4/5 battery (instead of 1/5 batter why I dont do this and it just dies) and doesn't show that it is charging. No, the wires are not touching eachother (just in case someone asks).

Does anyone know how to charge the battery using this method? Also are there any other methods of charging the batter without the charger?
