my computer cant read my phone

I have a samsung galaxy continuum and when i connect try to connect it to my computer it only charges. I tried the whole application-development-debug stuff but it doesnt work. my usb cable says that it is also for data transferring so it cant be the cable. i pulled down the notification bar but there isnt a usb icon... i have a mac but it didnt work on a PC either.
is my phone just not working?

look up the drivers for the phone.

is there a driver for mac? everything i downloaded wont open and im guessing its because those are made for PC

try Google "(phone model) driver"

and yes the drivers between the two will be different.

Make sure all of your drivers are up to date, then if it doesn't work, call the support number for Samsung.
