I had a bunch of text messages from various people on my droid and cleared them out as needed. Option to delete is turned off. I have had no problems with messenging at all since I got this phone the day it was available. Today I'm texting someone and I go to look for the messages and they are all gone, for everyone. What the heck happened? Anyone have any idea?

thank you

M

I had the same thing happen this a.m. Spent Idk how much time with customer support only to be told if it happens again call them. They are aware of it, but he said there is no way to get the messages back. I am NOT happy! Anyone that knows how to retrieve them, please help.

I have suffered from this issue several times in the past. What i've found to be most helpful is keeping a backup of my messages.

SMS Backup & Restore v3.2 Application for Android | Tools (available on the android market)

This program can be set to save your text messages daily or on demand. From there you can choose to restore from SD card if you lose your messages again.

Note: I have not had this problem occur in a long time. I had a theory it was due to having too many picture messages. So now whenever i get a picture message, i save it to SD then erase that message from the thread. I haven't had it happen in several months now, so maybe it's worth a shot.

If I'm not mistaken this app won't backup pictures received in texts so save them to SD.

Yeah i'm fairly certain you are right. But having the rest of your messages backed up is always a good thing.

I disagree with the picture message theory. I was brand new to the DROID when a quirk like that happened to me and stripped out various things. An explanation for something like that will compare to catching a flying monkey.....I'd rather have the truth to the problem told. I think it is more carrier related---Backing up is your friend.

There have been many threads and many theories about this, no one really knows the reason behind it, I dont think. Ultimately it comes down to making your own backups and just restoring them when/if it happens again.

Well let me just say what I am thinking and that way I do not have to beat around the bush. I worked with all the carriers, sales, techs, billing departments that there is in the market on user, bill payer, support provider, and heavy ties affiliated with each company before it was over. I know when I supported blackberrys at my firm that Alltel did not like ATT (at that time) getting into the markets action and suddenly a new tower conveniently went into a hotel near us and there was a lot of outages affecting our ATT blackberrys-- suddenly---until roughly the 7290's and thereafters came out.. the 3G happened. And I know that when I would go to my family roots and visit that when Alltel partnered with Verizon I had the best service. WOW! And that merger and service went sour when Verizon moved into our Alltel market both carriers did not play nice with one another in that area until Verizon took over Alltel. And somewhere in the big net there is a post on me about that subject under an alias name "Prefer the book" that can back another telecommunications comment up when someone posted an annonymous response of "No comment"....because they know it happens...cat fights amongst carriers happen. What I am saying is that usually in the world of telecommunication that things happen to users to sway them. When Alltel users didn't sway to the Verizon market, Verizon made a move for Alltel. ATT bought Cingular. And where calls dropped ridiculously once upon a time [and some days I wish it still happened] there is a brand new tower........that's ugly....but calls do not drop. And last not least, since I work around tech's all day long.....I've never seen many a tech tell the truth on hitting a button or dropping a code on an install, but miraculously things are fixed upon "are you sure? conversations." From Onstar issues, to blackberrys, to webpage fixes and breaks, circuit territory fights, mergers, and getting ugly "No, we've moved to another vendor meetings" I know 90% of the time someone knows who hit the button they just won't admit it because they do not have to. "Call the next time it happens" means we have a monitor on it, enjoy the 20 minute hold, for us to tell you I do not know." THAT is my flying monkeys comment explanation.....I have to go pack now and remember-- back your stuff up.

Today...not 20 minutes ago, serving me right, my text messages disappeared, after a force close. Now crazy things have been going on w my phone, call drops, applications opening on their own, like shazam, docs to go. I have been using task killer on what I thought was the causes. Easy teethering pro was turned back on, docs to go was, bluetooth share was back on, MP3 store was turned on again. Things I do not use but have because I thought I would need or use/added. I turned off google location too, and things calmed down......but admittedly....I am starting to get chaffed. I have also shut down voice search, calendar, corp. calendar, google partner setup, com.google.android.feedback, browser, my uploads, com.motorola.hiddenmenu, voice dialer, open home [not in use but change is good some days] and something I never use and that is facebook...off as of day one. I noticed com.motorola.hiddenmenu in task killer when I travelled recently and researched it and now not being new to the droid unexplaineds becomes more personal..........I was in Nebraska, I was next to an important airbase--I figured it was something to do with that, but I live near a different airbase and never experienced that issue.

Its a (droid) phone first , an open communication to be found fast when someone needs to find me fast for my kids.......then texting is a second source for that I cannot even hammer this message out on the droid without having the cursor auto scroll and move across the page-- losing my location in a sentence and scroll around .......help? Demons be gone.

Installed a Verizon recommended task killer, unloaded newly installed applications, dropped all unused apps., and updated software twice. Toes and fingers are continuously crossed and phone conversations can happen.......yea.

I've read a few threads on this actually so I might be able to lend you a hand. First off, what text app are you using, the stock one I'm assuming?

Stock msgr and thats only because when I surf market I am unable to find the raved about handcent. So until I can sit still and understand why I cannot find it...I have tried...I just have not raised my hand and asked the stupid question...."um....why can't I find this when I search for it?" For that, no time to kill admission.... I am stock. p.s. thank you for trying to help.....

Ah.... Now I've got a handle on you. Ditch the stock app :D

This problem is more common than it should be with it. Even though I've seen it occur with handcent, I think you'll find that app enumerably better than the stock version. As a matter of fact, I completely removed the stock messenger app...but we're not going to get into that here.

Let me walk you through finding it in the market. I'm going to assume that you obviously searched for it by typing in 'handcent' so we'll skip that step for both our sakes.

Are you running a stock phone? What ROM are you using, you can find this by going into your phone's settings, scrolling to the bottom, and touching 'about phone'. Tell me the ROM version, and the Kernel version.

Either way, go into your phone's setting, then into your applications. If your running Froyo touch all at the top, if your running 2.1 touch the menu softkey, and set the filter to show all. Scroll down until you see the market, touch that. Then clear data, clear cache (if thats available), force close.

Power off your phone.
Pull the battery out.
Count to 5.
Put the battery back in and power it back up. Wait for it to load, go the market, and try searching for handcent again.
If it still doesn't show up, then try searching other words like "text" or "SMS"

Post back, if this doesn't work, I've got a few more tricks up my sleeve ;)

I searched out ROM and Kernel before answering to view a standard answer before I responded to prevent dropping the key piece of information, and to prevent the unnecessary blah, blah to the end of the answer. ROM 2.1 update 1. Kernel 2.6.29.

Yes, I searched as you imagined. No, it does not show up after cache clear, force stop, and battery pull. A SMS! knock off appears. The salespitch signifies its not the desired applicaton, and if it is....it confused me because of the rants.

Since its past time for me to be still for a while......let me say I learned more about the Droid today, Froyo came out three weeks ago? I have not jumped into it so soon because the new has not worn off on it yet and unless the tool made my day more productive...I honestly am unable to be the first to focus on it. No time to give.....unless you caught me sitting still
.
