navigation voice intermittent

Have had my Droid for some time now but just started using the Navigation feature.

Sometimes the voice directions work, other times it is silent. I have clicked Mute and UnMute but it makes no difference.

I have used Car Home and gone straight to navigation. No difference.

I've done a phone restart and same problem. I hate taking my eyes off the road to read the map.

Any ideas?

Are you using the stock Pico TTS engine or a different TTS engine?

I assume I am using the stock. I have never downloades any other.
