Rokky here.
I was pretty excited about getting an Eris once I read that tethering could be done with Proxoid on Linux (personal use) and PDAnet, which I have used for XP with WinMobile for work. So I got one 2 days ago.
Motorola's Droid is just too klunky feeling in my hand, and I hate those dinky physical keyboards /rant: and their perpetuation of the slowdown-design qwerty pattern - since my thumbs need to learn a new pattern anyway, why not make it the vastly more efficient Dvorak layout? "innovative" phone designs miss that huge opportunity all the time, and now we are falling into the same old trap with thumbboards of "that's how everyone has learned to do it..." Arrgghhh! /end_rant). At least the Eris does not add to the bulk with a physical keyboard even if it is still the qwerty layout onscreen - maybe some thoughtful Android programmer will come up with a fully programmable onscreen key layout (or have they?).
I am coming from a XV6800 (yeah - another useless qwerty thumbboard, but I liked most else about it as an upgrade from my XV6700) that I have "tuned" fairly well to the way I use a phone/pda combo. The Eris seems to be missing a lot of that basic productivity functionality, but the Market seems to offer a source of add-ons to whip it into shape.
That's a problem though in simply wading through all the Market's offerings since the names are frequently too esoteric/fanciful to clue us in to what the package does. I was resigning myself to plodding through the descriptions, and "reviews", and endless install/test/uninstall cycles, but then found a thread for droidiacs to plug their favorite apps, and it gave me some good pointers, but it was late last night, and I just was browsing through the postings without acting on them (since I had switched back to the 6800 for "real use" until I pump up the Eris), and did not think to book mark the thread. I managed to remember "Bar Code" apps, set up wifi access, and am blown away just by a couple of those - there's gold in them thar hills! Now I cannot find that favorites thread with the search function. Any pointers/URL's anyone?
Some apps I am looking for:
TIA,

Some apps I am looking for:
- Any handwriting Graffiti/Letter Recognizer type apps.
- Quick note-taker app similar to OneNote.
- Converter of Pocket Office formats to something that comparable Droid apps can work with (or would DocsToGo handle them? I have used it on Palm devices, and found it fairly useful thereon).
- Converter of the WinMo contacts db file(s) - my GMail "contacts" seem to be a fairly random collection of nothing but email addresses of whomever sent email to my GMail account over the last few years I have had it - I never considered that to be a real contacts base vs what I have deliberately put in my Palm and WinMo devices, and synced with Lotus Organizer/PDAsync (no Outlook available until recently at work with conversion from Lotus Notes to M$ Outlook - gaggggg - which refuses to sync with my phone via ActiveSync - so much for M$ products' compatibility...).
TIA,
