by the way, any suggestions from you experienced guys on Roms for a greenhorn. I am about to start rooting the backing up my phone. I don't want a rom that is too advanced. I am basically looking to speed things up. every upgrade slows things down and I am tired of it. I also would like to be able to customize the backrounds easily. Thanks for your input!

You're DEF in the right place for that! If you haven't already looked, there are QUITE a few custom ROMs here to flash! I'd suggest trying them all! Its difficult to ask about ROM preference though without getting biased options. Kernels and ROMs alike run differently on each phone. They're all great but mainly just offer different features. I'm stuck on Ultimate Droid for example but, you may like Bugless Beast better. You just need to experiment and find what fits YOU the best.
