new "sleep" option

After upgrading to gingerbread I see a new power option when I hold the power button down called "sleep" (low power, instant on, wireless off).

What's the advantage of this? Why wouldn't I just turn the phone off? Or is this so the phone will still operate as an alarm clock if you have an alarm set?

So many questions.....

Sounds like a sort of quick boot option. It's like putting a computer into sleep mode instead of turning it completely off. For a phone, I can see it being useful in a similar way that it's useful for an unplugged laptop. You put it into sleep mode when you aren't using the device and want to save power, but you also want to be able to have it up and running in a shorter amount of time than a typical cold boot takes.

Just to let ya'll know, I tested this earlier today, and no the alarm that I had set did not ring while the phone was in sleep mode. So, basically, if you don't want any distractions from calls, alerts, or even the alarm, but you don't wanna wait for your phone to power up from a cold boot, use the sleep option.

Tried sleep mode last night and it was pretty awesome. Put phone in sleep mode at 11PM with 99% on my battery, turned the phone back on at 7AM and it was at 98% battery! Pretty sweet. I may have finally found the solution to my biggest complaint about the PRO, which is that it vibrates multiple times when it it powered off - and there is no way to disable this vibration. This sleep option seems to work just like the sleep in Windows 7 (or standby in Windows XP), which I use all the time. I love it.

I also tried this last night. Sent from 88% to 85% in roughly ten hours. Not bad. Booted right up with a longpress of the power button.

Has anyone else noticed this. Before the GB update I could "wake" the blank screen (in unlock mode) by just pushing the space key. Now I have to push the power button. Is there another way to set it so I can just push a key like I did before?

I, too, have noticed this change in behavior. I haven't found a way to turn the screen on by pressing a key on the keyboard. While it can be a bit more annoying, I was previously pocket-dialing sometimes if I had previously forgotten to turn the full screen lock back on. If you do figure out a work around please let me/us know.

Thanks.

I've also noticed that. I use widgetlocker with easy wake mode (which is supposed to wake the screen with any key and allow you to unlock). After the update, only the volume button wakes it up.

Anyone tried Sleep with the alarm? Would hope that it could be in this mode (like Blackberry), but have the Alarm wake it up.

Don't have gingerbread yet . . .

Seems like I've read somewhere that doesn't work.
