Newbe wants to create an app

I would love to create an app but have NO idea where to start. My idea is for a feet-inches-metric calculator. I am in architecture and I know that architects, engineers, contractors, etc use this type of calculator all the time and I have not found one for the droid yet.
Is there somewhere I can go to understand how to create an app?

Search google for Android SDK or Android Development. You will find the links you are looking for.

There are some pretty comprehensive unit converters in the market already. You may want to see what they do compared with your ideas.

Do unit converters let you add, subtract, multiply? I didn't think they did or they would be listed as calculators right?
The calculator I use at work is called "pocket handyman Pro" - I would be looking to replace that type of calculator for use in the field.

Do a search in the Market for "HandyConverter".

It does all these conversions.

I checked it out - it doesn't do what I need. Converters only tell you how many inches in x feet or x meters, etc.
I need a calculator that performs operations in feet, inches, etc. So I can add 1 foot 3 inches to 12 feet 9 inches and get a sum. Or multiply feet_inches and get a square footage number. The calculator I use at work adds, multiplies, divides, and subtracts in feet, inches, meters, centimeters, millimeters, and fractions of an inch and gives you the option to convert the answers.
I guess it's moot anyway - I'll have to wait for someone who knows app development to create this thing.
All I can say is that I would pay to have it on my phone - hopefully other people would too!
